After winning the Sustainable London competition in July, our students were awarded a cash prize, a first-place trophy, and an exclusive opportunity to further develop their winning prototype – the Sustain-a-Cast – during a placement with King’s Health Partners, part of the SC1 London Health and Life Sciences Innovation District.
Throughout the week, the students immersed themselves in the world of Health and Life Sciences. They shadowed surgeons, pharmacists, doctors, and scientists; participated in lab simulations; and explored cutting-edge surgical engineering and Synnovis labs. Here, they learned to analyse blood samples and assess the sustainability of medical devices – gaining real-world insight into the intersection of science, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
One of the many highlights included meeting with orthopaedic surgeons to explore the latest advancements in fracture treatment and interviewing one of the world’s leading robotic urological surgeons. These experiences not only deepened their understanding of medical innovation but also empowered them to see how their ideas could shape the future of healthcare.
The week concluded with a Final Showcase, where our students presented their enhanced prototype to an audience including Cllr Donatus Anyanwu, Cabinet Member for Economic Inclusion, and representatives from Lambeth Council and SC1 London. Their presentation sparked genuine excitement and demonstrated the potential of youth-led innovation in tackling real-world challenges.
Thank you to all the professionals who made this experience possible and for recognising our students’ talents and empowering them to be the voice of their future.
We are incredibly proud of their ambition, perseverance, and professionalism – they are true ambassadors of Ark Evelyn Grace Academy.
