Why do we learn physical education?
The curriculum will be broad and balanced allowing students to develop the knowledge and skills to be physically active and healthy in later life. Students will ‘strive to be their best’, by working at maximum effort.
• To nurture life skills in each child: leadership, communication, resilience, teamwork, and high self-esteem.
• To ensure that we consider that all students are individuals and tailor our provision accordingly in order to engage, challenge and include students of all sporting abilities.
• To include a range of offers for a wide variety of sporting opportunities both inside and outside the curriculum to develop student’s passion for sport.
• To offer a robust key stage 4 examination programme which stimulates students in all aspects and delivers positive outcomes.
• To enable students to develop healthy routines which can be taken into later life

Our approach
Knowledge-rich
The aim of curriculum is to allow students to develop fundamental knowledge required to beat competitors in a variety of different ways. In addition, for students to understand how to regularly self-assess their own lifestyle; thus, able to the appropriate adjustments to improve their health.
KS3- The students develop understanding of skills and tactics needed to complete in at least 4-5 different sports. This groundwork allows students to be experts and be complete as an adult successfully. Within lessons, students are taught various solutions to overcome sporting problems such as stopping a team from scoring.
KS4- For GCSE PE, the nature of course covers the elements needed for students to progress into sporting pathway. In addition, focusing on a depth of the psychological and physiological aspects which effect sporting performance.
Vocabulary-rich
For Key stage 3, the key words and terminology are taught when introducing a new technique or tactic. This are usually in the form of coaching points or principles of gameplay such as space. Students are then guided to utilise this vocabulary when giving or receiving feedback. Finally, highlighting the key.
For KS4 the vocabulary is important to allow students to develop their exam technique and understanding of the topic. For GCSE PE knowing the key terminology will always allow a student a high chance of gaining 1 mark for stating the content. For WJEC, the coursework is designed that students have to apply key terms with own sporting examples to achieve at least a pass standard. The strategy used in lesson is that all key words are placed within the learning objective. Consequently, students will write down definitions when the terms are introduced in the lesson. In addition, these terms are tested through DO NOW and show my homework quizzes. The keywords selected for each topic are in line with both specifications and highlighted in the schemes of work.
Mastery
In terms of mastery, this has two foci one on enrichment, which aims to improve students’ fundamental skills and knowledge to allow them to complete with other school successfully. In terms of KS4 mastery the session focus is on catching up areas of weakness identified from assessment and includes large element of exam technique. These sessions include a broad range of tools used from pixel and exam board master class.
The “Do now” in every lesson recaps previous content using a range of 1- to 4-mark question of the previous topics. On some occasions, the “Do Now” have been used to develop students’ ability to answer 6- or 9-mark questions successfully. Finally, the DO Now at times in line of the scheme of work, will give students time to respond to marking and make appropriate changes to enhance learning.
Progression Planning
For key stage 3, each sport is planned as a separate unit with skills mapped out from year 7 to year 9 to build upon skills. E.G badminton would go from serve in year 7 to variation of serve in year 9. In addition, each year looks at different aspect of the game such as year 7 football will look at man to man marking whereas year 9 will look at press and zonal.
For Key stage 4, the lessons are matched to achieving full elements of each assessment within the paper or unit under study. In addition, the practical lessons for key stage 4 build upon core skills students need to display to achieve higher marks for their external assessment.
Enrichment
In terms of nature of PE department will offer a wide variety of opportunities for students to continue developing their love of sport and own individual performance levels. The enrichment offer is split into three sections: competitive; improving as individual and developing leadership abilities. For the competitive element this involves the students attending after school training with the aim of competing against other schools in a variety of competitions. At moment this generally is football, basketball, and netball. The” improving as individual” element is where the enrichment offer is designed for students to achieve success as they improve their ability/health levels. This could be attending fitness session in the gym or going to table tennis club. The last element of “leadership” is where students undertake a sports leadership course, with the aim of assisting the PE department in leading enrichment activities and primary school competitions. This fundamental leadership steps will allow students to progress into coaching opportunities when they leave school.
