On Wednesday 8th May 2019, Alejandro Velez Reyes, Fahiima King, Ahmed Toure, Oumar Ford and Michael Haynes in year 7 had the opportunity to attend the Phoenix Book Awards ceremony at Streatham and Clapham High School in Lambeth.

Students throughout Lambeth (including our students) read shortlisted titles and gathered at the awards to find out who this year’s winner was. The ceremony was opened by the mayor of Lambeth, Ibrahim Douglas which was one of the highlights for our students. Other highlights of the event included a 'Q&A' session with Cas Lester - author of ‘Do you speak chocolate’ and Lauren Anderson - author of ‘the loneliest girl in the universe’ who discussed her motivation and inspiration behind her novel.

Our students had the chance to meet all the authors and have their books signed as well as win prizes and certificates for their participation in the reading competition. Oumar won best book review and Michael won best effort. Both won a book and a certificate.

It was a wonderful atmosphere full of passion for the love of reading.

Ms Barber, Literacy Coordinator at Ark Evelyn Grace academy said "Our students behaved exemplary  particularly when meeting the authors and listening to presentations from the Mayor of Lambeth and the authors themselves. It was a wonderful experience for our students."
