Science

Welcome to Evelyn Grace Academy’s Science Department

Science is an experimental and investigative subject that is the foundation to many careers. All pupils at Evelyn Grace Academy study Biology, Chemistry and Physics with the aim of making pupils scientifically literate, able to communicate in society about scientific developments and enthused about the sciences in general.

Our Head of Department is Ms. Chu

KS4 Curriculum

Year 10

The majority of pupils follow a mixed programme of all three sciences leading to separate GCSEs in Year 10 (AQA Core Science) and in Year 11 (AQA Additional Science). Students with a higher aptitude for Science are selected to take a triple Science course which leads to three separate science GCSEs (pupils take “Further Additional Science” in year 11).

A number of pupils in Year 10 follow a BTEC Applied Science course which results in a BTEC Level 2 qualification equivalent to a GCSE.  This is assessed primarily through completion of coursework in class.

In Year 10 so far we have covered

Cells/Plants/Photosynthesis/Compounds/Limestone/Metals/Animal Tissues/Digestion/Metals/Oil/Burning/Heating and Cooling/Insulation and the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Autumn 1: Cells/Plants/Photosynthesis/Compounds/Limestone/Metals
Autumn 2: Animal tissues/Digestion/Metals/Oil/Burning/Energy/Efficiency/GeneratingElectricity
Spring 1: Inheritance/Stem cells/Fossils/Plastics/Plant Oils/Emulsions/Renewable Energy/National Grid/Generating Electricity
Spring 2: Diet and health/Disease/Nerves and hormones/The Earth/The Atmosphere/EM Spectrum/Communications/Big Bang
Summer 1: Adaptations/Biomass and Energy/Cloning/Revision and Exam Practice/Revision and Exam Practice
Summer 2: GCSE exam/GCSE coursework

Year 11

The majority of pupils follow a mixed programme of all three sciences leading to separate GCSEs in Year 10 (AQA Core Science) and in Year 11 (AQA Additional Science). Students with a higher aptitude for Science are selected to take a triple Science course which leads to three separate science GCSEs (pupils take “Further Additional Science” in year 11).

A number of pupils in Year 11 follow a BTEC Applied Science course which results in a BTEC Level 2 qualification equivalent to a GCSE. This is assessed solely through completion of coursework in class.

This term we have covered

Autumn 1: Cells/Plants/Photosynthesis/Covalent Molecules/IonicCompounds/Diamond/Forces/Acceleration/Falling
Autumn 2: Animal tissues/Digestion/Metals/Atomic Mass/Analytical Chemistry/Power/Momentum/Voltage/Current
Spring 1: Respiration/Inheritance/Chemical Calculations/Rates of Reaction/Acids/Circuits and Components/Mains Electricity
Spring 2: Genetic Disease/Stem Cells/Fossils/Making Salts/Electrolysis/Nuclear Reactions/Half Life/Stars
Summer 1: Revision and Exam Practice/GCSE exam/13th May/Revision and Exam Practice/GCSE exam/Revision and Exam Practice
Summer 2: Examinations and revision

We provide access to a range of enrichment activities for all year groups including:
