EVELYN GRACE ACADEMY PUPILS WIN TOP PRIZE IN THE 2018 TEENTECH AWARDS!
EVELYN GRACE ACADEMY PUPILS WIN TOP PRIZE IN THE 2018 TEENTECH AWARDS
The TeenTech Awards is a program where thousands of students participate each year from schools and colleges all over the UK and several other countries across Europe. Judges for this event come from the largest technology companies in the world and the event also involves celebrities from the tech world who come around and take a look at the projects too. The event took place on Monday 25th June 2018 at The Royal Society and after months of work, designing and perfecting their project, one of Evelyn Grace Academy’s teams; The AlphaApps (consisting of Leynner Caicedo, Bruno Silva and Charles Clayton) were not only taking part in this event, but they won with their innovative product “The Augmented Reality Comic Book”.
The team had to present in front of judges from JVC and not only did they impress the judges, but they also caught the attention of the COO of Vodafone who came back again for a second look at the product. The AR Comic Book was creating a lot of talk throughout the Royal Society with teachers and students crowding the AlphaApps’ table after being told by other students to have a look at what Leynner, Bruno and Charles had created.
The product involves using a smartphone app developed by Bruno to scan a physical comic book developed by Charles. Once you scan a page of the comic book, characters and elements from the page appear in 3D graphics in your actual environment to set up an augmented video game that you can see and control on your table/floor through your phone.
Leynner, the project manager and head of marketing, took responsibility for the promotional campaigns, the business plan and the ideas behind the video games and story. With their success at the TeenTech Awards and a business plan that impressed JVC, the team are now looking into releasing their product to the public by early 2019.
Maggie Philbin, TeenTech CEO says: “Congratulations to all the winners this year. These were highly contested Awards and we were blown away by the standard of the entries. Students really enjoy the whole process and it’s great to see not only how they participate year after year but how very keen they are to support others.”
TeenTech is an award winning, industry-led initiative, co-founded byMaggie Philbin OBE (BBC Tomorrow’s World) and Chris Dodson, OBE.
