Promoting British Values at EGA
Ark Evelyn Grace Academy is a mixed, non-selective, 11-18 secondary school, at the heart of our community. Our aim at Evelyn Grace Academy is to develop all of our students, so that they can lead success lives, access their preferred university or career and become the leaders of tomorrow in every walk of life. As a school, we are dedicated to providing a range of opportunities which enable all of our students to flourish.
Part of our role in preparing students at Evelyn Grace Academy for adult life in modern Britain is ensuring that we promote and reinforce British values to our students.
The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these were reinforced in 2014. The five British values are:
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
At Evelyn Grace Academy students will encounter these values within the curriculum and through our provision for the social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of all who attend the academy. We aim to ensure that the values permeate everyday school life and link with our core values of excellence, endeavour and self-discipline.
This list is not exhaustive however here are some examples of some of the ways in which we promote the British Values.
The principle of democracy is reinforced at Evelyn Grace Academy with democratic processes being used for important decisions within the school community, for instance, elections being held for Head Boy and Girl and Prefects positions, as well as for form captains and Student Council members. Involvement in debates in school, and Model United Nations events are further opportunities for students at all key stages to learn how democratic societies work. The principle of democracy is also explored in subjects like History, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Government and Politics. Student questionnaires conducted throughout the year also enable students to give their views on different aspects of school life.
The rule of law
Evelyn Grace Academy students will encounter rules and laws throughout their lives. The involvement of our students in the creation of our code of conduct helps them to understand the reasons behind the rules and the consequences if they are broken. The academy allows opportunity to debate and discuss the reasons for rules and laws so that our students can recognise the importance of these for their own protection. An understanding of the importance of rules is consistently reinforced through assemblies, PSHE and across the curriculum. Our Safer Schools Partnership agreement with the metropolitan police, our involvement in army cadet and fire brigade programmes and visits to and from law firms also help to bring about greater understanding of the rule of law.
At Evelyn Grace Academy we strive to prepare our students to enter the world as resilient, independent, curious, confident citizens excited about learning about the world around them. EGA students are actively encouraged to make informed choices, with the knowledge that they are in a safe, secure, empowering and supportive environment. Students are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised on how to exercise these safely. Learning about e-safety in ICT or through PSHE, sex and relationship education workshops, and a robust programme of careers education are just some of the ways in which EGA enables students to learn how to exercise their individual liberty.
At Evelyn Grace Academy we insist on mutual respect as a way of fostering positive relationships with others. Our behaviour for learning policy and code of conduct help students understand how their behaviour affects others. All members of the school community are constantly reminded of the need to show respect for the thoughts and feelings of others and that by showing respect we also gain respect. Through our curriculum and pastoral support systems everyone in our school community is able to learn and flourish in an environment of high standards, courtesy and consideration. Collaborative learning in classrooms, a wide range of school teams, paired reading, peer mentoring, restorative justice, tutor and year group activities and competitions all facilitate the promotion of mutual respect and support encouraging students to work together to achieve goals.
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
Evelyn Grace Academy is a richly culturally diverse community. Religious Education, Philosophy, PSHE and Citizenship are some of the subjects which allow our students to explore other faiths and beliefs. We have a prayer room which is well used by our Muslim students and an active Christian Union group. A local church group uses the premises for Sunday worship. The academy celebrates and recognizes other faith based festivals through the school year in assemblies and in PSHE.
The academy’s inclusive ethos provides all students with regular opportunities to meet learn and work with those of other faiths and beliefs. EGA has hosted international visitors from across the globe and staff and students have undertaken educational visits to Austria, Spain, France, Uganda, Zambia and China. The academy is developing links with two sister schools in China. This exposure helps equip our students to understand their place in a culturally diverse society. EGA students also discover how they can make a positive contribution as global citizens and learn respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
